About Neon Coil

Neon Coil is a free browser game that takes Snake — about the purest arcade formula there is — and layers a modern obstacle course on top of it. The fundamentals you know are all still here: your coil grows by one segment with every pellet you eat, and touching your own tail ends the run instantly. What's new is the board itself. The grid is now dotted with portals that teleport you to a matching gate elsewhere, speed ramps that hurl you forward across several tiles, and hazard tiles that kill you the moment you touch them.

On top of that, power pellets temporarily rewrite the rules. Slow-mo buys you thinking time when the board gets frantic, phase lets you pass straight through your own tail, and magnet pulls nearby pellets toward you so you can scoop them up without threading a tight path. Eating eight pellets clears a level and drops you into the next one — faster, busier, and with more hazards to route around. Your score goes to a global leaderboard, with no download and no account needed.

How to play

  • Desktop: steer with the arrow keys or WASD. You can't reverse directly into yourself, so plan turns a moment ahead.
  • Phone / tablet: swipe in the direction you want to turn — the swipe controls make it a natural phone game.
  • Eat pellets to grow and score; every 8 pellets advances you to the next, faster level.
  • Avoid hazard tiles, the outer walls and your own tail. Portals and speed ramps are safe to use — and often the fastest way around the board.

Portals, ramps & power pellets

The board features are what turn Neon Coil from a memory-of-your-tail game into a routing puzzle. Portals preserve your heading — you come out of the far gate travelling the same direction you entered — so the danger isn't the teleport itself but what's waiting where you arrive. Speed ramps are genuine double-edged tools: they're the quickest way to cross the board, but they commit you to several tiles at once, so taking one blind is a fast way to slam into a hazard or your own coil. The power pellets each solve a different problem — slow-mo for control, phase for escaping a boxed-in tail, magnet for greedy pellet runs — and the players who climb the leaderboard are the ones who save each one for the moment it's actually worth using rather than eating it on sight.

Tips & strategy

  • Plan your portal exits. You keep your heading on the far side, so arriving blind next to a hazard tile is the classic Neon Coil death. Know where a portal drops you before you take it.
  • Hug the edges early. Running the perimeter while your coil is short keeps the whole middle of the board open for later, when your tail actually needs the room.
  • Treat ramps as commitments. Only take a speed ramp when you can see that the tiles beyond it are clear — it's a shortcut and a trap in the same tile.
  • Spend phase deliberately. Its best use is cutting straight through your own coil to reach an awkward pellet, not saving it vaguely "for later" until it expires unused.
  • Straighten out in late levels. Move in long straight runs and turn at the last moment. Wiggling around burns the open space your growing tail depends on.

About the genre

Snake is one of the most recognisable games ever made — a single growing line, one rule, and a board that fills up with your own past decisions. Its genius is that the player builds their own obstacle, so the game gets harder purely as a consequence of doing well. Neon Coil keeps that self-made-maze core and adds an external layer of portals, ramps and hazards so that reading the board matters as much as remembering your tail. It's an original modernisation built for the browser, not a reskin of any particular version.

FAQ

Is Neon Coil free? Yes — free to play in your browser, supported by ads, with nothing to buy.

Do I need an account? No. You only pick a display name when you submit a score to the leaderboard.

Does it work on mobile? Yes — swipe steering is built for touch, which makes it a great phone game.

How do I clear a level? Eat eight pellets. Each level you clear starts faster and adds more hazards to route around.

Are the portals dangerous? The portal itself is safe, but you keep your direction through it — so the risk is arriving somewhere you didn't plan for. Always know your exit.
