About Sonar
Sonar is a free browser game built around one idea: you can't see. You pilot a small submersible through a pitch-black flooded cavern, and the only way to find your way is to ping — a burst of sonar that ripples outward and, for a moment, lights up whatever it touches. Rock walls, glimmering pearls, the gate that leads deeper, and the lurkers waiting in the dark all flash into view on the echo, then fade back to black.
The catch is that sound carries. Every ping that shows you the way also wakes the lurkers nearby, and they home in on where you are. So you dive on a knife-edge: ping enough to navigate, but not so much that you draw the whole cavern down on you — all while your air ticks away. Reach the gate to descend to a larger, darker cavern; your depth and score go to a global leaderboard.
How to play
- Desktop: swim with WASD or the arrow keys — or hold the mouse button to swim toward the cursor. Press Space (or click quickly) to ping.
- Phone / tablet: hold anywhere to swim toward your finger; a quick tap, or the Ping button, sends a pulse.
- Collect pearls for points and a little air. Find the glowing gate to dive to the next cavern for a depth bonus and a full tank.
- Bumping rock in the dark wastes air and makes noise. Lurkers cost you a hull segment — lose all three and the dive is over. So does running out of air.
Tips & strategy
- Ping in rhythm, not in panic. One good pulse lights a whole room for a second — read it, then move while the echo lingers.
- Keep moving between pings. A pulse tells a lurker exactly where you were; if you've drifted on, it arrives at empty water.
- Pearls give back air, so a tidy collecting line is also your oxygen line — don't leave easy pearls behind.
- Once the gate flashes into view, burn for it. Later caverns are bigger and darker, but each gate refills your tank completely.
- When your air warning turns red, stop exploring and head for the nearest gate or pearl — drowning ends the run instantly.
