About Swarmfall
Swarmfall is a free, browser-based take on the "survivors" genre — the wildly popular format where you face down an ever-growing horde of enemies armed with weapons that fire entirely on their own. The setting is an eldritch night: a single torch-lit hero stands in the dark while a shadow swarm pours in from every edge and grows heavier with each passing minute. The defining twist of the genre is fully intact — you only move. There is no attack button. Your wards strike automatically, so your real weapon is positioning.
That makes Swarmfall a game about movement and geometry. You kite the swarm in wide arcs, carve escape routes before you need them, and circle back through the soul-shards your kills scatter on the ground. Shards level you up, and every level-up offers a choice of three boons — a new ward, a bigger attack area, faster projectiles, more movement speed. Those choices compound, so no two runs build the same way and each one becomes a small experiment in what kind of hero you can assemble on the fly. You're not trying to win so much as to last: survive as long as you can, and your time and kill count go to a global leaderboard.
How to play
- Desktop: move with WASD or the arrow keys. That's the only movement input you need.
- Phone / tablet: drag anywhere on the screen and the hero follows your thumb; rounds work well in portrait or landscape.
- Attacks are fully automatic — you never press a fire button. Walk over soul-shards to collect them and fill your level bar.
- On each level-up the game pauses and offers three boons. Pick one to shape your build for the rest of the run.
Building a run
The heart of Swarmfall is the boon draft. Because your damage is automatic, the boons you pick decide everything about how a run plays — whether you become a close-range whirlwind, a long-range artillery platform, or a fast, evasive hero who simply outruns the night. The key decision is focus versus breadth: pouring upgrades into two or three wards makes them powerful enough to keep pace with the escalating horde, while spreading yourself across one of everything leaves you with a handful of weak tools that all fall behind at once. Early damage matters most, because faster kills mean faster shards, which means faster levels — a snowball that, once it starts, carries the whole run.
Tips & strategy
- Never stop moving. The horde path-finds straight at you, so travelling in wide circles keeps it strung out in a chaseable clump behind you instead of surrounding you.
- Sweep your kill trail. Soul-shards don't come to you — uncollected shards are wasted levels, so loop back through the space where your wards just did their work.
- Prioritise damage early. Utility boons are tempting, but in the opening minutes raw killing power compounds fastest: more damage → more shards → more levels → more boons.
- Commit to a build. Two or three upgraded wards will carry you far deeper than one copy of everything. Decide what your hero is early and lean into it.
- Don't idle. The night escalates on a timer, not on your kills, so hiding in a safe corner just means a bigger swarm with no extra levels to meet it. Spend every calm phase farming shards.
About the genre
"Survivors-like" games exploded in popularity because they invert the usual action formula: instead of aiming and firing, you manage movement and build while the combat happens on its own. It turns a frantic shooter into something closer to a puzzle of survival and growth — every run is a race between how fast the horde scales and how fast you can. Swarmfall is an original entry in that space, built from scratch for the browser with an eldritch theme, automatic wards, and a boon draft that makes each night play out differently.
FAQ
Is Swarmfall free? Yes — free to play in your browser, supported by ads, with nothing to buy.
Do I need an account? No. You only pick a display name if you want to submit your run to the leaderboard.
Does it work on mobile? Yes — drag-to-move was built for touch, and it plays well in both portrait and landscape.
How do I attack? You don't — your wards fire automatically. Your entire job is to move well and choose good boons.
Why do I get overwhelmed around the same time every run? The horde scales on a timer, so if you're not levelling fast enough you fall behind it. Collect more shards and prioritise damage early to keep pace.
