About Starhive
Starhive is a free browser shooter that takes the classic Space Invaders formula and turns every dial up. The alien hive still marches down the screen in a tight formation, sliding side to side and dropping a row lower each time it reaches the edge — but that's where the resemblance ends. In Starhive, individual invaders break rank and dive-bomb you, swooping out of the formation on unpredictable arcs, so you can never just sit and trade shots with the wall of ships above you.
Two systems give Starhive its modern feel. Destroyed invaders sometimes drop power-ups — multi-shot, rapid fire, shields and more — that fall toward you to be caught or ignored, and every bit of damage you deal charges an Overdrive meter. Fill it and you can unleash a screen-clearing beam that sweeps the entire hive at once. There is no final wave: the formations descend faster and fire more the longer you last, so the game is really a question of how long you can hold out. Your score goes straight to a global leaderboard, with no download and no account required.
How to play
- Desktop: move with ← → (or A/D) and hold Space to keep firing.
- Phone / tablet: drag left and right to move — your ship fires automatically, so you can focus entirely on positioning.
- Catch the power-ups that fall from destroyed invaders. Each one changes how you fight for a while, so grabbing the right one at the right moment matters more than grabbing all of them.
- When the Overdrive meter is full, trigger it to sweep a beam across the whole hive — huge damage, and a lifesaver when you're surrounded.
Power-ups & Overdrive
The power-up drops are what let a good run snowball. Rapid fire and multi-shot raise your damage output so you can thin a formation before it reaches you; a shield buys you a mistake or lets you push aggressively into a dive swarm. Because drops are tied to kills, playing well feeds you more tools — but the drops fall through contested space, so collecting them is its own risk. Overdrive sits on top of all of this as a resource you charge through damage and spend deliberately. Dumping it the instant it's full wastes it; holding it for the moment the hive gets low or a wave of divers commits turns it into a reset button that can save an otherwise-lost run.
Tips & strategy
- Shoot the bottom rows first. The lowest invaders are the ones that dive, and thinning them removes the threats that can actually reach you while buying reaction time.
- Don't chase every power-up. A shield is worth crossing the whole screen for; a minor upgrade sitting under a diving invader usually isn't. Weigh the drop against the danger of going to get it.
- Treat Overdrive as a panic button, not just damage. Its real value is clearing space when you're cornered, so save it for when the formation is low or a swarm of divers is inbound.
- Open a safe lane. Clearing a full column early in a wave gives you a gap to retreat into and shoot up through later, when the screen gets crowded.
- Watch for the tell. Divers telegraph before they drop — a ship shudders out of formation a moment before it swoops. When you see it, move first and shoot second.
About the genre
The fixed-shooter — a single defender at the bottom of the screen against a descending grid of enemies — is one of the foundational arcade formats, and its staying power comes from a very clean tension: the enemy always outnumbers you, and the screen only ever gets more dangerous. Starhive keeps that core but answers the format's biggest weakness, the slow static wall, by adding divers, drops and Overdrive so that positioning and resource timing matter as much as marksmanship. It's an original game built for the browser rather than a copy of any single title.
FAQ
Is Starhive free? Yes — free to play in your browser, supported by ads, with no purchases or unlocks.
Do I need an account? No. You only enter a display name if you want to put a score on the global leaderboard.
Does it work on mobile? Yes — the drag-to-move-with-autofire control scheme is designed specifically for touch screens.
What does Overdrive do? It's a meter you charge by dealing damage; when full, it fires a beam that sweeps the entire hive. Save it for when you're in trouble.
Why do I keep dying to the same invaders? Almost always the divers. Prioritise the bottom rows and react to the shudder that signals a dive, and survival gets much easier.
